The way the worked for me was to follow the exact steps from Ford directly. I do know when I was searching for instructions, there were various ways mentioned on different sites & YouTube videos. But I have a 2016 with SYNC 3 and did update from ver 1 directly to ver 3.
FORD SYNC UPDATE FOR FREE
A bit expensive for something that I think should be offered by Ford for free so I think I will keep trying on my own before going this route. When I questioned if this could be updated from 1 to 3 the tech though it should work but mentioned they use a different link only available to dealers. That would cost $275 including the updated software. They also can update the USB ports so I can have ApplePlay. Ironically the tech was in the middle of updating an F150 and said he was going on 4 hours waiting for the update to complete with the vehicle idling the entire time! I inquired what the cost would be to have them do the update on my Flex. I stopped by my local Ford Dealer and discussed this with a knowledgable service advisor and technician. Makes me also think I cannot update directly from version 1 to 3. We get the same message: " Installation failed The installation has run out if space or does not work with this version". This didn't work any differently than our attempt on our Mac.
FORD SYNC UPDATE SOFTWARE
Today my wife borrowed a windows computer to get the updated software to a USB stick. I used a brand new 32GB USB stick formatted correctly. I do indeed have the 8" color LCD touch screen. I plan to go back in and reread all posts on this site but in the meantime does anyone have any guidance ? Thanks. I could turn this over to my local Ford service department to update but I suspect they will charge me labor time and since I assume more updates will come in the future would hope I could do this myself. Makes me wonder if going from Version 1.0 to 3.0 is not possible for my year and model but I would have expected the Ford site to have only allowed a download of what would work for my VIN. This morning I started the car and found the message: " Installation Failed: The installation has run out of space or does not work with this version". No change so I just let it sit overnight with the car off. I decided to try that idea first leaving the USB stick in place while I took a short trip to refuel late last night. Another post suggested give it time and it will eventually update as you drive the car. I could however borrow a Windows computer and start over. Seems odd since Ford does have MAC instructions. I quickly gathered that others have had issues with the USB format and one post suggested this does not work with a file downloaded with a Mac computer as we have done. Sensing her growing frustration and our average MPG plummeting idling in the driveway, I started reading through several posts on this site. To be sure we had it right, my wife wiped the USB stick clean and retried the download process again. She chatted with a representative on the Ford site who repeated the USB size and format requirements.

After waiting over an hour this status did not change. The display indicated "Update in Progress". She then proceeded with the instructions and plugged the USB into one of the console ports with the engine on and running in park. I believe she downloaded the 3.0 version. Yesterday my wife started by registering on the Ford site, entering the VIN and downloading the latest update onto a fresh USB stick formatted following the MAC instructions. We have not updated this in our 32 months of ownership and now trying to do it in one swoop. It has the factory SYNC 3 Software Version 1.0. My wife and I have a 2016 Ford Flex Limited purchased new in January 2017.
